SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA TEMPLE

The San Diego California Temple was the third temple built in California, following the Los Angeles California Temple (1956) and the Oakland California Temple (1964). It was built on a 7.6 acre land at 7474 Charmant Drive situated near the La Jolla community in San Diego. It has been considered as a rich blessing in the lives of members and non-members alike since it became the forty-fifth operating Mormon temple at the end of 1993. The San Diego California Temple is also the forty-seventh constructed temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

There were a couple of architects who handled this project. One of them was William S. Lewis, Jr., design architect; Dennis Hyndman, project architect; and Shelly Hyndman, interior design architect. The Hyndmans who are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints but are Roman Catholics have not experienced to tour around the interior of a Latter-day Saint Temple until the construction and opening of the Las Vegas Nevada Temple in 1989. They worked on a concept of a modern, two-tower design. It has 4 ordinance rooms and 8 sealing rooms, and has a total floor area of 72,000 square feet (6,700 m2).They connected the towers with an atrium containing a garden which can be accessed from a two-story Celestial Room filled with towering art glass, suspended light fixtures, and featuring a grand staircase to an upper-level balcony. The exterior finish is marble chips in stucco giving the building a white glow. Just off Interstate 5, the Temple is a major landmark when traveling the highway to or from San Diego. The Temple is brightly illuminated making it even more noticeable at night.

Tourists driving along Interstate-5 will not miss this stunning structure, bearing the image of an ice sculpture. The white, palace-style building features an awesome architectural design with numerous spires. The temple, which hosts religious activities for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is 190-feet tall and covers 59,000 square feet. While visitors are not allowed inside the temple, guests are welcome to tour the perfectly manicured grounds and admire the building's architectural design during regular Temple hours.

The groundbreaking of the temple also marked a meaningful event for President Ezra Taft Benson who presided this as his first temple groundbreaking ceremony after suffering a minor heart attack four months earlier. On Monday, December 23, 1991, the 186th anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith, a gilded statue of the angel Moroni was installed atop the eastern spire of the San Diego California Temple. Shortly after the setting, a traveling flock of seagulls—a bird of symbolic significance to the Church—circled the new statue about three times before continuing on its course. Over 720,000 visitors attended the widely publicized open house of the San Diego California Temple in 20 February–3 April 1993. Due to President Benson’s ailing health, President Gordon B. Hinckley was instead assigned to dedicate the temple in 23 sessions where 49,273 persons attended. The temple was honored as Headliner of the Year for 1993 in the landmark category by the San Diego Press Club.

The Public Relations Society of America's prestigious Silver Anvil Award was also presented to the temple due to its efforts of increasing public awareness of the Church and the role of the temple during the open house in 20 February– 3 April 1993. The award was under the category of special events and observances by non-profit organizations.
